What is CranioSacral Therapy?

I am asked on a daily basis what in the world is Craniosacral Therapy? Something I often struggle to explain in a quick, neat little package. Craniosacral Therapy is derived from the work of late Osteopathic Physician William Sutherland. Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, yet powerful hands on therapy used to address pain and dysfunctions in the body that are often inaccessible by other means. This is done by evaluating the functioning of the physiological system called the Craniosacral system, which is comprised of membranes, tissue, cerebral spinal fluid, blood and lymph that surround and protect our most important structures within the body.

How does CST it work?

It is through a very refined, sensitive touch that I access the deep structures of the body via contact with the connective tissues which surround and connect all the muscles, bones, nerves and organs within your body. I am able to precisely locate and relieve areas of restriction that are causing your pain and dysfunction. By bringing fluid and movement to an otherwise restricted and imbalanced area within the tissues, the overall functioning of the body is greatly improved creating balance and function within.

Upledger CranioSacral Therapy is based on perception and palpation of the CRI, or cranial rhythmic impulse, which is the movement of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the borders of the dural and intracranial membranes. This fluid movement can be palpated anywhere on the body because of the body’s continuous connective tissue network (fascia). The subtle movements of the cerebral spinal fluid create rhythmic changes in the tonicity of the nervous system itself, which via the peripheral nerves, cause changes in the tone of the continuous bodily fascia. Thus, the fascia reflects the rhythmic movement of the CSF.

CranioSacral Therapy enhances the body’s natural healing processes to improve the operation of the nervous system, dissipate the negative effects of stress, enhance health and well-being, and strengthen resistance to disease.

The work can be profoundly transformational for many people.
